She grew up during the social and political turmoil and change of the 1960s which is where she first encountered abstract expressionism. Una studied art in the UK at both the Guildford College of Art and Hornsey College of Art. She completed her studies in the fine arts at what is now the University of East London. Una went on to pursue a career as a lecturer in art and design within the further education sector, focusing on Foundation and Access courses.
